KITCHENER FIRE FIGHTERS SUPPORT PINK SHIRT DAY

Kitchener Professional firefighters applaud the efforts of our youth who have taken the courageous step to speak out against bullying. They inspire us to be better and to support them in their efforts. Emergency service personnel in our region respond to numerous calls for help everyday, which are the result of bullying behaviour. Youth who feel helpless with nowhere to turn need to know they have people who care about them and it can mean so much when it comes from a peer. We want you to know we think you are heroes for your bravery and we stand behind you in your quest to rid our schools and society of bullies.
Kitchener Fire Fighter pulls driver from burning car
The KPFFA is very proud of their Brother Nick Dorken who recently came to the rescue of a man in a burning car in Florida. Nick along with his wife and child were on their way home from Disney when Nick noticed in his rearview mirror what he thought was a dumpster fire. Nick decided to turn around to check it out, and when he got closer he saw it was a car fire. The driver had lost control at an intersection, jumped the curb and then slammed into a hydro pole. The car burst into flames. Sure enough there was a driver in the car by himself and the car was on fire. The man was unconsious in front of the steering wheel. Nick wasted no time running over to pull the man out of the vehicle. Nick said it was amazing the timing of everything. another 30 seconds and he wouldn't be alive today. He was glad that he was there, and able to help.
Nice work Nick!!
Bowling for Big Brothers and Sisters
The Kitchener Fire Fighters Association is participating in the fundraiser for Big Brothers and Sisters on Feb 22nd. We will be joining other teams such as the Kitchener Rangers, Regional Police and Paramedics. This will be located at Towne Bowl and Moose Winooski's is sponsoring the event. As well there will be teams from all of the local tv and radio stations. We will be entering 2 teams for this event, and we hope there will be lots of other teams to make this event very successful.
Our Every Day Heroes
The Kitchener Fire Fighters Association and The Kitchener Knights of Columbus have teamed up to make this new program a success. We go to Grand River Hospital every 3 weeks to help lift the spirits of the kids who are in for either surgery or other stays. We usually have 2 Fire Fighters as well as 2 members from the Knights of Columbus. We go in to spend time, play games, and deliver small presents. Sometimes it is just sitting down and listening to the kids. We will be attending grand River this Feb 20th then on March13th.

Gift of Life
Please read the following message from one of our Brothers Liam Raftis:
As some of you may know, I have been dealing with a lung disease for 13yrs. My lung condition has progressed to Stage 4 Lung and Lymph Node Sarcoidosis. Every day I work hard to maintain my lung function and lung capacities and I really Value each and every breath.
Yesterday, On my drive into Toronto for my appointment at Toronto General Hospital, my appointment was with a Specialist from the Lung Transplantation Team. During my drive into Toronto, I was listening to AM1010 radio news and they were talking about just how low the Organ Donations from Ontarian's are, particularly in the Toronto area.
I ask you as a friend to please consider giving the gift of life and make the donation. I have included the link and it only takes a few minutes of your time and this generous gift may save the life of many others.
Please pass this along to friends and family,
Sincerely
Liam Raftis

The 2nd Annual Bill Duncan Memorial Hockey Tournament
The date of the Tournament will be February 2nd & 3rd at the Activa Rec Center. This Tournament is in honour of our Brother Bill Duncan who passed away in the Line of Duty. His wife Donna agreed to have all of the funds donated to our local charity "Clarky's Kids" which is tied into the Pediatric Oncology Group at Grand River Hospital. Please come to support and cheer on the teams. Kitchener has 1 team in the Rec division and 1 team in the Competetive division.
